The design was originally created by Walter Gropius (05.1883–07.1969) in 1922/23 for the Fagus Factory in Alfeld an der Leine. The factory complex itself had been designed earlier, in 1911, by Walter Gropius together with his collaborator Adolf Meyer (06.1881–07.1929) and is today recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site—an important milestone in the development of modern architecture. The example offered here was produced in the 1980s by the German manufacturer Tecta, a company renowned for continuing and preserving the Bauhaus design tradition. Condition report. The wooden frame shows light to moderate age-related wear consistent with its age (see images). The seat and back cushions have been newly upholstered and covered in the fabric “Pavage” by Hermès (Dedar). The textile design is based on a tie pattern created by Philippe Mouquet and features a refined geometric composition with contrasting graphics reminiscent of Parisian cobblestone paving. From 2011 until October 2020, Dedar served as Hermès’ partner for the production and distribution of upholstery fabrics and wallpapers. These exclusive collections were completely sold out by 2020.
