Timba Baga Sitemu Drum from Guinea. African tribal art. This Timba Baga Sitemu drum comes from the Baga people of Guinea. This type of drum is traditionally used in rituals and initiation ceremonies, but its small size (37 cm - 14.56") indicates that it served more as an ornament than as a played instrument. Carved from a hard wood, it rests on a quadrangular base supporting a stylised zoomorphic figure, probably a horse, symbolising prestige and authority among the Baga. The upper bowl is richly decorated with geometric patterns and reliefs in carved cordage. These elements enhance its ritual character and its connection to the Baga initiation universe. The matte patina and signs of wear testify to a certain age, suggesting it may date back to the early or mid-20th century. This type of piece, although less common than larger ceremonial versions, is sought after by collectors for its sculptural and ethnographic character.
