Beautiful pair of Belgian solid oak chests (solid oak wood throughout, no veneer) with richly carved front panels in Neo-Renaissance / Neo-Gothic style, probably late 19th century. Richly carved solid oak coffers in Flemish Neo-Renaissance style, related to the Mechelen furniture tradition (comparable to cabinets, but executed as chests). Each chest has: • a thick, flat solid oak lid. • a fully wooden interior. • solid, unfinished oak, only lightly oiled. • fine carvings with foliate motifs and mouldings on the front. The chests are very heavy (truly solid oak). They have a beautifully aged patina with signs of use appropriate to their age (small corner damages, scratches and stains, see photos), but no structural issues. Because the surface is not varnished but only oiled, the chests can be finished to your own taste: re-oiled, waxed, varnished, or stained in a colour. Ideal for anyone looking for a characterful piece that can still be brought to the desired finish. Particularly suitable as decorative storage chest, bench at the foot of a bed, or eye-catcher in a hallway or living room. The dimensions are approximately: length 66/67 cm, depth 37/38 cm, height 53 cm.
