ADOLPHE DETEIX (Amplepuis, 1892-1967) Wheat Fields. Circa 1930. Oil on cardboard. 37 X 45 cm (cardboard) 42.5 X 50.5 cm (frame) Signed bottom left: Deteix. Stamp of the Deteix workshop on the back. In my opinion, Adolphe Deteix is the best painter from Lyon in the 1920s and 1930s. Born in Amplepuis, in the Loire, 70 km north of Lyon, he studied at the École des Beaux-Arts in Lyon, then at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris. Based in Paris, he always maintained a strong connection with Amplepuis and the Lyon region, and he regularly exhibited in Saint-Étienne, Lyon, as well as in Paris. Deteix painted flowers, fruits, nudes, landscapes, urban and religious scenes, and he could also work on a large scale, notably creating cycles of frescoes for churches. His works are present in many museums, churches, and town halls. He was a meticulous and thoughtful painter, with his own distinct palette and a subtle, lively brushstroke. These rolling and sunny fields are likely located in the countryside near Amplepuis.
