Antique pine wood chest painted – Central Europe, around 1900

Antique pine chest from Central Europe. It comes from rural domestic furniture at the turn of the century when this type of chest served as a dowry and storage in peasant homes. Pieces of this type were hand-painted with floral or heart motifs and were part of the wedding trousseau in rural Central European communities, storing bed linens and textiles. The structure, assembled with dovetail joints, features a domed lid with beveled edges and rests on small feet integrated into the sides. The original paint in grayish tones has naturally worn away, revealing the ochre base in places while retaining the heart decoration on the front. In a contemporary bedroom or entryway, it serves as a storage chest or low bench, bringing color and character from Central European painted furniture. Details.
