Superb and rare Ax chair model by Peter Hvidt and Orla Mølgaard-Nielsen, edition Fritz Hansen, 1947. The success of the AX chair, produced from 1950, was a pivotal moment for Hvidt & Mølgaard. In 1948, they presented the chair at the "International Low-Cost Furniture Design Competition" organised by MoMa. Their coherent overall approach to design, construction, production, and shipping for international transport was rewarded. The AX indeed used a new technology at the time, three-dimensional industrial plywood. The veneering allowed for the creation of this unique profile while also lightening the chair, which was shipped disassembled. Visually, one of the most striking features of the AX is the continuous curve of the armrests, which seem to have emerged from the structure, reminiscent of the creations of Finnish architect Alvar Aalto from the 1930s. The chair is in magnificent overall vintage condition. The teak wood backrest and seat, as well as the beech and mahogany structure, are perfectly preserved with minimal signs of wear that are barely noticeable. The chair is very stable and functional, ready to take its place in your home! Seat height: 39cm.
