Writing desk or bonheur du jour in mahogany by E. Poteau.

Rare writing desk or small bonheur du jour in mahogany and mahogany veneer in Empire style. Late 19th century. With rich gilded bronze ornamentation, finely chiselled details (drops with laurel crowns and ribbons in spandrel, rosettes, floral garlands in the belt and mouldings). Attributed to the cabinetmaker Edmond Poteau, Paris. Plaque with the stamp E. Poteau, Paris, inside the desk. A well-known Parisian house at the end of the 19th century for its high-end style furniture. Top in burgundy leather framed by the wooden structure in usable condition. The upper back part forms a pen case with an inkwell flap. The top lifts, revealing a large storage compartment. Stain inside, see photo. On the right side, you will find a small drawer with a gilded bronze pull knob, where feathers and other writing accessories were once stored. This elegant desk rests on a turned column leg base, connected by an H-shaped stretcher, topped with finely chiselled gilded bronze capitals. Perfect stability. Height under the belt: 64 cm. In good usable and preserved condition, with a beautiful patina on the wood and bronzes. Note a small crack in the wood near the inkwell, see photo.
