Pair of MR10 lounge chairs — Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, attributed to Knoll, circa 1970

Designed in 1927, the MR10 is one of the founding objects of 20th-century furniture design and a reference point for Bauhaus design. Mies van der Rohe's cantilever construction — a tubular steel loop that replaces the traditional four-legged structure — was a radical proposal at the time, translating engineering logic into pure formal elegance, distinguishing this model from earlier American patents by making the large semi-circular front skids both a formal and functional feature, aimed at making the chair pleasantly flexible. This pair features the MR10 variant without armrests in chrome tubular steel with a black leather seat and backrest — a constructive detail that is both structural and decorative, and one of the distinctive features of the early and quality productions of this design. The chrome maintains good reflectivity and the overall structure is excellent, with the leather showing a patina consistent with age. Dimensions (HxWxD): 79cm X 50cm X 65cm - Seat height: 44cm. The chairs are attributed to Knoll International, which holds the authorised production licence for the MR series since the post-war period. Unfortunately, the labels have disappeared over time.
