Alexandre Prévost (1832-1910) Oil on canvas. Allegory of Law. Circa 1900-1910. Signed bottom left. The frame bears the oval stamp of the famous Parisian shop: "Fabrique de Couleurs - Maison MERLIN - PAUL DENIS Successeur - 19, Rue Médicis, PARIS - Canvases & Drawing Articles". The Paul Denis establishment succeeded the Merlin house at 19 Rue de Médicis (just opposite the Luxembourg Gardens) at the very beginning of the 20th century. This specific type of stamp allows us to date the manufacture of the canvas and the execution of the work between 1900 and 1910. Dimensions: 29.5x16.5cm. Very good condition. I own several works by this artist, reduced shipping costs for bulk purchases. *Alexandre Céleste Gabriel Prévost was a French painter, draughtsman, and illustrator, born in 1832 in Paris and died in 1910. Active during the second half of the 19th century and the beginning of the Belle Époque, he distinguished himself by his versatility, moving from genre scenes and literary illustration to large projects of allegorical compositions and painted decorations. Training and Artistic Beginnings. Born in the heart of the capital, Alexandre Prévost trained in the Parisian academic mould in the mid-19th century. He developed an excellent mastery of drawing, pastel, watercolour, and oil on canvas techniques from an early age. His early works are firmly rooted in the pure tradition of genre painters of the time, focusing on everyday life, religious subjects (such as his Virgin and Child), as well as architectural and urban representations. A Chronicler of Late 19th Century Paris. During the 1870s and 1880s, Prévost turned to the representation of Paris and its transformations. Like his Impressionist and Realist contemporaries, he set up his easel on the banks of the Seine, capturing the vibrancy of the new bridges and river transport stations.
