Important Renaissance-style writing desk with drop front, 19th century. Dimensions: Height: 195 cm. Width: 160 cm. Depth: 56 cm. Spectacular drop-front writing desk in richly carved walnut, inspired by French and Italian Renaissance furniture. This monumental piece is distinguished by the abundance and quality of its deeply carved decoration. The upper part features an imposing entablature with dentils, surmounting a façade adorned with leafy scrolls and masks. The drop front is decorated with a remarkable carved panel depicting a mythological or Bacchic scene animated by putti and antique figures. On either side, two female terms sculpted as caryatids support the architecture of the piece. Once opened, the drop front reveals a spacious writing area fitted with a decorative wrought iron gallery. The lower part opens with two doors carved with pastoral and mythological scenes in relief. It is framed by two male atlantes treated in the round, symbolically supporting the entire structure. The meticulous execution of the sculptures, the rich iconography, and the generous proportions testify to a quality production intended for bourgeois or aristocratic interiors of the late 19th century.
