Old French popular art bench from Auvergne, circa 1800–1850

This unusual antique bench comes from the Auvergne region of France and dates from the first half of the 19th century, around 1800–1850. The bench is made of oak and pine and reflects the regional tradition of French folk art, also known as Art Populaire. Its high back features a carved sun motif with a decorative copper rosette at its centre. This distinctive detail gives the bench a pronounced sculptural and rustic character. The bench consists of two distinct sections. The wood shows visible marks, signs of wear, colour variations, and other signs of age and previous use, consistent with its age and original function. These marks are part of its authentic antique character. Antique wooden furniture may show signs of historical woodworm activity.
