Side table or "Dumb-Waiter," mahogany, George III, around 1800 England

Splendid side table or "dumb-waiter" made of mahogany wood. The table consists of two levels, arranged in a graduated manner, creating an architectural structure: a large circular top level and a lower level with four rotating circular surfaces of the same size placed symmetrically for placing dishes. The table tops are decorated with fine satinwood marquetry composed of two concentric circles with a geometric border. The outer edge is also framed by a complex marquetry pattern, reflecting the elegant and understated style of the George III period. The two levels are connected by a turned and fluted shaft, resting on a central pedestal with three feet. The entire base incorporates the same satinwood cord visible throughout the piece. The decoration is characteristic of Georgian-style furniture developed during the reign of George III, where furniture began to assimilate features of neoclassicism, moving away from the rococo. Made of beautiful English mahogany, a material very common in various English styles, mahogany has a slightly reddish hue and beautiful natural grains, in addition to being very durable. Historically, the top part was used for placing glasses and drinks, usually wine, and the lower part for placing plates, clean or dirty. This type of furniture was widely used in the 18th and 19th centuries. Also called a "silent servant, " as its use allowed avoiding servants entering the dining room and interrupting or listening to the intimate conversations of guests. This table was popularized in the United States by President Thomas Jefferson after discovering this piece during a visit to France. A very practical, elegant, and refined table that adds sophistication and beauty to any space.
