Pair of Japanese-style Candelabra by Ferdinand Barbedienne and Edouard Lievre.

Creator: Ferdinand Barbedienne and Edouard Lièvre. Style: Japonisme (1850-1900) / Fin de Siècle. An exceptional pair of candlesticks with ovoid bodies and bulging bellies in chiselled bronze with a brown patina, around which a dragon is entwined, resting on tripod bases with three stylised elephant heads and a frieze in Chinese style. The candlesticks themselves are in the Japonisme style, made of gilded bronze, enhanced in the central part with a relief dragon and topped with an elephant. The bobeches are original and are pierced with Japonisme floral motifs. The whole is typical of Edouard Lièvre's work and of exceptional quality. Signed by the founder 'F. Barbedienne' on the base. Circa 1870-1880. Edouard Lièvre collaborated with Ferdinand Barbedienne, particularly for the creation of pieces inspired by Japonisme and Orientalism. Modernity at that time was a taste for exoticism, with the discovery of Japanese art, blended with a flourishing imagination that Lièvre expressed through high-quality stylistic compositions and collaborations with the most prestigious Parisian houses such as de Sormani, Christofle, and Barbedienne.
