INDIA mid-20th century large rectangular silk painting (1.20m X 1.40m). Unframed. Depicts a scene of Hindu devotion: It shows the God KRISHNA crowned and with his characteristic blue colour, playing the flute, surrounded by 6 GOPIS on each side, presumably RADHA his wife, in a wooded landscape (palm trees). At the bottom, a pond with lotus flowers and two peacocks displaying their feathers is painted. The scene is bordered by a floral frieze. Some details (crown, jewellery, etc.) are painted in gold and silver. The painting is slightly worn in the central part (Krishna) where the canvas must have been folded; otherwise, the artwork is in good condition, with no holes or tears. The back features a label from the Indian Government HHEC LTD stating in English that it is a handmade product from Kenara in Rajasthan, along with the handwritten note No. 137 / 55. NOTE: This Pichhavai style canvas represents Krishna (the 8th incarnation of the God Vishnu) in his "centre of devotion" aspect, charming with his Banshri flute, the caretakers of the herds of Vrindavan (gopis). Packed weight 1kg.
