Bobo Sun Mask - Mali (medium size) Dimensions: 50 x 48 x 4 cm Provenance Bobo people, Mali. The Bobo are primarily established in Mali and Burkina Faso, in the region of Bobo-Dioulasso. Symbolism Contrary to what its name suggests, this type of mask represents a nocturnal bird of prey (owl or horned owl), a sacred animal in Bobo cosmogony. The large circular eyes and stylised beak attest to this. In Bobo beliefs, these masks intervene to restore cosmic order between the elements - sun, earth, rain - and ensure the protection of the village against hostile forces. They also accompany ceremonies related to fertility and childbirth. Ritual Use Worn during agricultural cycles, initiations, and funerals. These masks belong to the tradition of dance masks used in purification and protection rites. Description Circular mask made of hand-painted wood. Traditional geometric patterns in triangles arranged in concentric rays, characteristic of the Bobo-Bwa style. Subdued palette: black, white, reddish-brown. Central face with eyes in concentric circles, butterfly-shaped nose-beak. Vertical crest and grip handle on the reverse, now serving as a wall mount. Condition Excellent. Bright paints, sound wood.
