Dimensions: 90 cm X 80 cm (large size) Superb traditional sun mask from the Bobo community, a unique, large-format piece of authentic African craftsmanship. DIMENSIONS 90 cm (height) X 80 cm (width) ORIGIN & CULTURAL MEANING This sun mask comes from the Bobo ethnic group, spread between Mali and Burkina Faso (Bobo-Dioulasso region). Spiritual symbolism: Despite its name "sun mask, " it actually represents an owl—a sacred nocturnal animal—which explains the large, bulging, circular eyes and the beak-shaped nose. Traditional function: According to Bobo beliefs, this mask has the sacred function of restoring the balance given by God between the sun, the earth, and the rain. It protects the family and the village against evil spirits and promotes marriage, fertility, and the health of newborns. Ceremonial Use: This dance mask is worn during agricultural festivals to ensure the smooth running of the seasons, during initiation rituals for young people, and at important funerals. It is traditionally used in rites of protection or purification. ARTISTIC DESCRIPTION Magnificent circular mask with traditional hand-painted geometric patterns. The concentric triangles in vibrant colors (white, indigo blue, black, rust brown) create a striking visual effect, typical of Bobo-Bwa art. High-quality craftsmanship with a central wooden handle. CONDITION Very good condition - A carefully preserved decorative piece.
