KD6 pendant model mid-century space style by Achille and Pier Giacomo Castiglioni for Kartell, 1960s

Large pendant lamp from the Italian manufacturer Kartell, designed by Achille and Pier Giacomo Castiglioni in 1959. The lamp is formally composed of two parts: the metal mask element and the translucent plastic (methacrylate) umbrella elements. This combination of materials is particularly special here. The classic material of nickel-chromed steel and the state-of-the-art methacrylate of the time create a contrast of colour and materiality. The metal, as the actual supporting element, only extends from the top of the lamp. The umbrella parts are removable. The lamp is surrounded by two white diffuser shades, positioned like a luminous sphere inside the large shade.
