Mid-century modern vase, pressed glass, Czechoslovakia, 1960s

A cylindrical vase from the 1960s, produced in Czechoslovakia after a design by Vaclav Hanus, made of pressed glass. It is kept in a cool, semi-transparent shade of light blue, presenting a subtle colour gradient that becomes more saturated at the base and gently lightens towards the top. The outer surface is embossed with a distinct, organic pattern imitating tree bark, with vertical grooves and irregularities, while the interior remains smooth and uniform. The shiny, glassy coating emphasises the depth and clarity of the glass, and the proportions of the slender, tall form combine utility with decorative value. The vase is in very good condition, with no visible signs of use, cracks or chips; there are also no signs of renovation or restoration. This is an item that tells the story of Czechoslovak modernism – the voice of nature transformed through glass. Its texture, reminiscent of young birch trunks and the rhythm of vertical lines, seems to bring the tranquil landscape of Central Europe into the interior.
