Heir to a family of wine merchants, his father became a judge at the commercial court of the seine. Refusing to follow the family path, jules cavé enrolled at the école des beaux-arts and became a student of william bouguereau and tony robert-fleury, two famous academic painters. In 1885, aged twenty-six, he debuted at the salon des artistes français by exhibiting a portrait of a man. At this time, the painter still lived with his parents at 54 rue du ranelagh. The following year, he presented an important historical painting, a martyrdom in the catacombs, for which he won a third-class medal. Subsequently, the subjects of his works alternated between commissioned portraits and genre scenes in the spirit of his mentor bouguereau. His porcelain-like paintings attracted a foreign clientele fond of innocent young shepherdesses depicted against a landscape backdrop. The dispersal of his studio collection, recently rediscovered among his distant descendants, has shed light on a whole unexpected aspect of his production. Consisting of a collection of small, unmounted canvases, this collection shows, beyond a large number of preparatory sketches of figures for his academic paintings, dozens of highly sensitive landscapes. Among them, undergrowth and rural views, but also a few seascapes and a sky. This last canvas, painted at the end of the century, has pinholes in its four corners which testify to its attachment, still virgin, to a wooden tablet.
