In the 1960s, some German designers broke free from the strict codes of modernism to explore a more liberated, almost experimental approach to furniture. This sculptural coffee table by Heinz Lilienthal is a remarkable illustration of this. The square steel top features an elaborate surface treatment, achieved through a process of engraving and controlled oxidation. The sheet metal has been textured and then chemically treated to reveal variations in shades and organic patterns, reminiscent of mineral mapping. The lines that structure the composition appear to have been carved or reserved before treatment, creating a slight relief that is perceptible to the touch and enhancing the depth of the design. Each top thus develops a unique pattern, the result of a controlled reaction between metal and oxidising agents. The dark-stained solid wood base adopts a sober and graphic architecture, with vertical volumes contrasting with the expressive richness of the top. The balance between structural rigor and an almost pictorial surface gives the whole piece a pronounced sculptural presence. A unique and rare piece, preserved in perfect condition, it measures 110 cm on each side and 43.5 cm in height. A work of furniture, at the border of art, intended for a collector's interior.
