Ludwig Passini, young Italian with a shawl, 1880, watercolor, portrait.
LUDWIG PASSINI Vienna, 1832 – Venice, 1903. Young Italian Woman with a Shawl, 1880. Watercolor on paper. Signed and dated at the top right "Ludwig Passini 1880" 16 × 21 cm. Framed. Austrian painter trained by his father Johann Nepomuk Passini and then at the Academy of Vienna, Ludwig Passini established himself in the second half of the 19th century as one of the most brilliant watercolorists of his time. After stays in Florence, Rome, and then Venice, he developed a body of work dedicated to scenes of Italian life, popular costumes, and character portraits. This watercolor depicts a young woman dressed in traditional Italian attire. The model, captured from the waist up, slightly averts her gaze in a meditative pose. The subtle treatment of skin tones contrasts with the vibrant colors of the shawl in green and red hues. The artist demonstrates his mastery of watercolor here: a few light strokes are enough to construct the volume of the face, while the fabrics are rendered with remarkable freedom of execution. Beyond the ethnographic interest of the costume, the work is particularly captivating for its psychological dimension, with the model's melancholic gaze giving the portrait a particularly endearing presence. Dated 1880, this piece belongs to Passini's period of full maturity and perfectly illustrates the technical elegance and sensitivity that secured his international reputation.
