Willem hendrik gispen, art deco modernist round coffee table, tubular structure

Art Deco coffee table with Bauhaus modernist accents, reminiscent of Marcel Breuer's work. This round table, stamped (see image), was designed by Dutch designer Willem Hendrik Gispen, Gispen edition, in the late 1930s. As shown in the images, the tubular metal structure (brushed steel) is perfectly assembled and welded, and the table features a black linoleum top, all original. Fully authentic, it stands out for its remarkable state of preservation, although there is a slight burn on the edge of the top (see photos). Diameter: 96 cm, height: 60 cm. Biography: Willem Hendrik Gispen (1890-1981). After training as an architect, he became more interested in applied arts. In 1916, he founded a metal art and craft workshop. In 1927, he began producing lamps and experimenting with tubular steel furniture. The first catalogue was published in 1930. He designed most of the company's models, with the help of C.J. Hoffman. Gispen was a member of the "Opbouw" group and maintained good relations with modern architects in Rotterdam, leading to numerous projects, such as the furnishing of the Van Nelle factory and the Bergpolderflat building with Gispen's tubular steel furniture. With a few exceptions, Gispen's creations were not very original but of good quality. After World War II, he left the company and founded a new firm, "Kembo." Lit.: J. Van Geest, O.
