Pair of original Y-Chairs (CH24 Wishbone Chair) in solid oak, designed in 1949 by Hans J. Wegner and manufactured by Carl Hansen & Søn in Denmark in the 1970s. The Y-Chair was Wegner's first model for Carl Hansen & Søn. Produced continuously since 1950, it is now among the most famous chairs in Danish design. Wegner was inspired by portraits of Danish merchants sitting on Ming dynasty Chinese chairs, a motif he reinterpreted in a clean Scandinavian form. The chair gets its name from its characteristic Y-shaped backrest, which supports the semi-circular bent wood backrest-armrest and gives the model its lightness. Each chair requires over 100 manufacturing steps, most of which are done by hand; the seat alone is woven with approximately 120 metres of Danish paper cord. The chairs have been carefully cleaned, oiled, and varnished; the solid oak has a beautiful natural patina. The seats have been completely re-woven with new Danish paper cord. An earlier owner had shortened the legs: we restored them to their original length with contrasting walnut tips. This unique detail is particularly elegant and makes this famous model even more unique. Both chairs bear the original manufacturer's label from Carl Hansen & Søn under the seat. Condition: very good vintage condition, cleaned, oiled, and varnished, with new seats in Danish paper cord and legs extended with walnut tips. An icon of Danish design with a personal touch, ideal for a discerning dining room. Dimensions (per chair): width 55 cm, depth 51 cm, height 76 cm, seat height 45 cm.
