Elegant and full of character, this fine earthenware soup plate from the Gien factory seduces with its delicate thistle motif in a deep raspberry color, on an ivory background, typical of the late 19th century. The decoration, both botanical and graphic, is enhanced by a plant frieze on the border, in a refined naturalist style. Charming patina (surface cracks and slight chips on the edge), which gives it all its authenticity. Stamped Gien: Founded in 1821 by the Englishman Thomas Hall in the heart of the Loire Valley, the Faïencerie de Gien is one of the most prestigious French manufacturers and is distinguished by its printed then hand-painted decorations: historical scenes, floral, naturalist or exotic motifs. It notably supplied the nobility, embassies and the European bourgeoisie. The thistle motif, sober and graphic, is part of this naturalist vein typical of the late 19th century. Ideal for a table with old-world charm or as wall decoration in a country-house style kitchen. Beautiful old condition, a beautiful patina and a shine on the edge (see photos) Diameter 23.5 cm, height 3 cm. Perfect for ironware collectors or lovers of antique tableware with a chic flea market style.
