Sapporo Coffee Table by Mario Marenco for Mobil Girgi, 1970s

A vintage Italian Sapporo coffee table in walnut, designed by Mario Marenco for Mobil Girgi and produced in Italy during the 1970s. This low square Italian modern coffee table combines rich walnut grain with the sculptural rounded forms characteristic of the Sapporo collection, making it a distinctive example of 1970s Italian mid-century modern furniture. A square walnut top sits between four substantial corner supports, each formed from paired rounded vertical elements that continue slightly above the tabletop. These softly sculpted forms contrast with the clean geometry of the top and give the piece its unmistakable rhythm. The visible walnut grain, rounded edges and warm polished finish soften the otherwise substantial construction and make the table equally striking from every angle. The design belongs to the period in which Marenco established himself within Italian furniture design; Arflex records him working as a furniture designer from 1970 alongside collaborations with several important Italian manufacturers.  The Sapporo collection translates that period’s interest in bold geometry into a warmer, more tactile language through substantial timber construction and generously rounded forms. Condition. Good vintage condition with signs of age and use consistent with its period. The tabletop shows light scratches, small marks and surface wear. The rounded walnut corner elements show additional scuffs, scratches and areas of finish wear. Further small marks and age-related patina are present throughout.
