Chinese low altar cabinet with two doors and dark patina – China, around 1900

This low Chinese altar table made of dark lacquered solid wood, with two central doors and solid sides, is a domestic piece from northern China around 1900. Low tables with central doors—descendants of kang tables and portable altars—belonged to rural living at the end of the Qing period and the beginning of the Republic. Their moderate height was suitable for use while sitting on the floor or on the kang (heated platform bed), accommodating offerings, books, or small family treasures. The structure is assembled with blind mortise and tenon joints. A dark red-black lacquer covers the wood, now worn on the edges and corners, revealing the warm wood underneath. The two central doors pivot on wooden axes and close with original wrought iron rings. The sides remain solid, and low crossbars support the base. Details.
