Pair of sculptural bases in bamboo, Italy, 1960s
Two remarkable sculptural bases made of bamboo, originating from Italy and dating from the 1960s, combine the classic silhouette of a column with the lightness and rhythm of natural bamboo. Each base consists of numerous fine bamboo stalks arranged vertically around the column. Towards the base, the elements elegantly curve outward in a radial formation, creating a foot of great graphic beauty. This same movement is found at the top, where the bamboo gently flares beneath the circular platform. The white finish of the tightly bound bamboo creates a striking interplay of lines, light, and shadow. From a distance, the design evokes the fluting of a classical column, while the apparent structure gives the pieces a decidedly modern and sculptural character. Their tall and slender proportions make them ideal as supports for ceramics, plants, or sculptural objects, and they are equally captivating when left unadorned. An eloquent example of mid-20th century Italian decorative design, where traditional forms are reinterpreted through natural materials and expressive, almost architectural construction. Sold as a set of two pieces.
