This antique pine coffee table is a Chinese salon table with a thick top resting on four legs joined by stretchers, assembled using mortise and tenon joints. It originates from northern China, from the late Qing dynasty, where solid pine was crafted using traditional joinery without hardware. Low tables with wide tops occupied the centre of the room in Chinese homes, serving as a surface for tea and meals and as a low gathering point. Their robustness and formal simplicity catered to intense and daily use. The top is made of beautifully thick solid pine, mounted on straight-section legs reinforced by stretchers. The joints are mortise and tenon, hand-fitted, and the wood retains tool marks on the edges and ends. The whole is stable and of notable weight. The patina is warm and uneven, born from use: the pine shows its grain and knots under gentle wear, with tones ranging from honey to chestnut and small marks and dents that tell its story. The surface reads like a living wood, minimally restored. With its ample proportion and low height, it serves as a coffee table in front of a sofa or as a large surface tea table. It integrates into wabi-sabi, japandi, contemporary rustic, and Asian-inspired interiors, where it brings presence and an honest work surface. Details.
