Rare "pumpkin" pitcher by Louis Lourioux. Art Nouveau period.

Superb polychrome glazed stoneware jug with iridescent reflections, shaped like a pumpkin or melon, signed Louis Lourioux (1874-1930), a famous French ceramist. A rare piece in this condition, emblematic of the Art Nouveau aesthetic. • Period: Early 20th century. • Material: Iridescent polychrome glazed stoneware. • Dimensions: Height 17 cm – Diameter 15 cm. • Very good condition, no chips or cracks. Louis Lourioux (1874-1930), master French ceramist, settled in Foëcy, Cher, in 1902. Imaginative and creative, he developed forms inspired by the plant and animal worlds, flourishing during the Art Nouveau period and transitioning to Art Deco. His signature is very distinctive: two intertwined L's placed on an animal. Contrary to popular belief, it is not a dog but a stylised she-wolf, a nod to the first syllables of his name (Lou-rioux).
