A circa 1700 primitive carved oak sword chest of simple, vernacular form. Constructed in solid oak with a hinged plank top, the front and sides decorated with chip carved detail, including repeating punchwork borders and linear carving. The proportions are low and elongated, typical of early chests of this type, originally used for the storage of long objects such as swords or textiles. Raised on integral end supports with shaped cut-outs. The surface shows a deep, even colour with good patina throughout, and the top retains a well-used but attractive wear consistent with age. Notably well preserved — free from woodworm, with a clean and fully intact interior, and retaining its original feet. A strong, honest example with practical use as a blanket chest, window seat or low storage piece. Condition in line with age — surface wear and minor historic marks. Structurally sound.
