Ink painting on paper by Pio Joris, artist born in Rome on June 8, 1843 and died in Rome on March 6, 1921. The work is in excellent condition. FRAME DIMENSIONS: 54 X 39; DRAWING: 34 X 19 Pio Joris (Rome, June 8, 1843 – Rome, March 6, 1921) was an Italian painter, engraver, and watercolorist. He belonged to the circle of Roman disciples of Mariano Fortuny, known for his style combining authentic realism with a pleasant, lively, and engaging touch. A painter known for his essentially commercial tendencies, he was nevertheless considered one of the greatest painters of late 19th-century Rome. He participated in major Italian and international exhibitions, often winning first prizes and sometimes achieving undeniable success (Munich Exhibition, 1869; Vienna Exhibition, 1873; Paris Exhibitions; International Exhibitions in Rome, 1883 and 1911; Universal Exhibitions in Paris, 1878 and 1900, to name but a few). The themes he most frequently dealt with were those of Roman folklore, represented in an engaging manner and popular with the emerging bourgeoisie; however, he also painted historical pictures, such as The Flight of Pope Eugene IV, now housed in the National Gallery of Modern Art in Rome.
