Minimalism vase, glass, designed by J. Słuczan-Orkusz, Poland, 1970s

A vase designed by Jerzy Słuczan-Orkusz in the 1970s for the Krakow Glass Institute is an example of Polish utility glass maintained in the spirit of minimalist modernity. It is made of thick opalescent glass in a subdued, cool white with a subtle bluish glow. The simple, bulbous form tapers towards a low neck and a wide, flat collar, while two round, wide handles, symmetrically placed at the rim, attract attention and balance the proportions. The lack of any decorations or contrasting colour accents emphasises the purity of the form; the vessel is finished to a high gloss, which enhances the effect of soft, diffused light on the surface. All connections of the elements are made with visible craftsmanship precision, typical of Polish glass studios of this period. Condition is very good – the surface is free of scratches, chips or discolouration, with no signs of repairs or reconstruction. The vase speaks the language of the subdued modernity of the Gierek decade, when Polish design sought its own path between functionalism and the tradition of antique forms. The opalescent, white body refers to the history of amphorae, while at the same time it speaks of a fresh look at shape – simplified, clear, free from excess. The high gloss of the glass, without intrusive decorations, gives a subtle reflection of light, as if each line carries an echo of the modernist restraint of the 1970s. In arrangement, it is worth emphasising its pure form – it can be placed on an oak console, a sideboard with light veneer or a minimalist shelf. It works well solo, in diffused light, or surrounded by other vessels from Polish glass of the era, to create a collector's set. It can be combined with ceramics in raw colours or black and white wall graphics – it will fit both in vintage spaces and in scandi, modernist and eclectic interiors, showcasing objects with history.
