After studying at the School of Applied Arts in Art and Industry from 1938 to 1943, Roger Capron became a teacher at the same institution. In 1946, he settled in Vallauris with Robert Picault. The two founded the Callis workshop in 1947, and were later joined by Jean Derval. During this period, Roger Capron's pieces were characterised by their generous shapes and elements added in high relief. In 1950, Capron participated in a group exhibition at the Madoura workshop, led by none other than Pablo Picasso. At this time, Capron developed the desire to produce in larger series to make his creations more accessible. A transition occurred in his work, as he changed techniques, moving from throwing to casting. Two years later, differences arose between the three friends (Derval, Picault, Capron). Thus, Capron opened his own pottery factory. The cast forms from this period are typical of the free shapes of the 1950s. The grid pattern decoration executed in reserve with black and white paraffin, then coloured, is characteristic of his production. The year 1958 marked a transition in his work when Roger Capron began producing tiles and decorative panels. He gradually abandoned shaped pieces for architectural works, finding a way to combine industrial manufacturing with artistic research. Stylised animals, suns, geometric patterns... The formal vocabulary of Roger Capron gradually filled the space through a play of clever associations.
