"tapestry wall hanging "the history of the king". 20th century" Regency style tapestry "the canal of Bruges". Reproduction by artis flora, circa 1960/1970. Based on the 17th century tapestry "the history of the king" kept at the Louvre. Wool tapestry with printed decoration, lined with burlap with wall fixings on the back (in wrought iron) along the entire length. Label on the back. Created in 1662 by Colbert, the Royal Gobelins Manufactory was to provide works intended to furnish royal residences and serve as diplomatic gifts. But the grand design of the factory was above all political. It was to show the power of France and serve the political propaganda of the king. The first works provided by Charles Le Brun, the king's first painter and director of the factory, glorify the king in an allegorical manner: tapestry of the elements and seasons, tapestry of the history of Alexander. The tapestry of the history of the king, initiated in 1662, will break with tradition. The program designed for this tapestry was to glorify King Louis XIV through the significant events of his early reign, demonstrating his diplomatic talents, his military bravery and his vision for the arts. Dimensions: 175x126 cm. Condition: very good condition, three small white dots in the upper border of the tapestry (see photos).
