Flat gourd made of hand-painted faience, of Slovak manufacture. Circular body, short neck edged in violet and yellow, four yellow-tipped lugs, two of which serve as feet. Milky white glaze, polychrome decoration in blue, green, gold yellow, and manganese violet. On one side, a bird in a medallion bordered in yellow, surrounded by a crown of blue flowers and green foliage. On the other side, a bouquet of yellow flowers with a violet centre, framed by palmettes and small blue flowers. The rim is adorned with blue lines and yellow dots. The reverse bears the inscription "MODRA", the number 92, and the initials of the painter, hand-drawn. Modra, a small wine-producing town northeast of Bratislava, has been a centre of popular faience since the 17th century, in the tradition of the Haban faience makers, and the flat gourd with lugs belongs to the traditional repertoire of its workshops. Made in the second half of the 20th century, the number 92 may refer to the year 1992 or a model number. This gourd can find its place on a shelf, console, sideboard, or windowsill, alone or with other popular ceramics. Its bold colours may suit a bohemian chic decor or a more minimalist interior. Height: 24.5 cm, width: 19 cm, depth: 4.6 cm. Weight: 1 kg. Generally in good condition, glaze with fine crazing, some small firing irregularities, decoration well preserved.
