Description Arnold Bode was a painter, draughtsman, interior decorator, designer, exhibition curator, and university professor from Germany. Considered a degenerate artist under the Nazi regime, he was one of the instigators of the first "documenta" in Kassel in 1955, which he directed until 1968. He thus created the most important contemporary art exhibition in the world – a laboratory of art, design, and urban planning that remains unique to this day. Additionally, he worked as an artist, university professor, and furniture designer. Bode was particularly active as an interior decorator and furniture designer in the 1950s. As early as 1948, he began designing seating for the "Federholz Gesellschaft" (Featherwood Society). Inspired by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe's Barcelona chair, Bode designed the rocking chair presented here in the early 1950s. Only a few examples of this model were produced, making it all the more rare. Arnold Bode passed away in 1977 in his hometown of Kassel. He entered the history of the Federal Republic of Germany as one of the most important artistic visionaries and activists.
