Ole Wanscher, the Danish scholar of the colonial chair
Ole Wanscher (1903-1985) is one of the great figures of modern Danish design, a direct pupil and successor of Kaare Klint at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen. A scholarly designer and furniture historian, he signed for fifty years for A.J. Iversen, Fritz Hansen and P. Jeppesen furniture where a deep knowledge of English, Chinese and Egyptian chairs irrigates every piece. His Egyptian Stool (1960), Colonial Chair (1949) and Rungstedlund armchair have become references of restrained, scholarly elegance.
The Egyptian Stool and Colonial Chair remain Ole Wanscher's most iconic pieces. Scandinavian vintage furniture to find for those wanting a scholarly Danish signature, in the direct line of Kaare Klint.
