Charles Dudouyt, the sculpted oak of Cubism
Charles Dudouyt (1885-1946) is one of the great French cabinetmakers of the interwar period. Based in Paris, he signed between the 1920s and the Second World War furniture of exceptional plastic strength: chests, desks, sideboards and chairs cut from solid oak, with feet sculpted in spiral, twist or ball form. His style, at the crossroads of Art déco, Cubism and rustic brutalism, was long underestimated. It is now rediscovered as one of the most singular languages of modern French furniture.
Sideboards, chests and desks in sculpted oak by Charles Dudouyt remain the most identifiable pieces of his workshop. Vintage French furniture to find for those wanting a massive, organic piece historically rooted in French brutalism.
