In this announcement, you will find a powerful sculptural bas-relief, deeply expressive and anthropomorphic by Venija Vučinić Turinski, executed in her characteristic language of reduced and archetypal form. This rectangular composition features a procession of four vertical totem figures in high relief, emerging from a richly worked background. Each figure is abstracted to its essential geometry — elongated bodies, simplified limbs, and symbolic facial features — creating a rhythm across the surface that is both structured and primal. The figures appear both human and ritualistic, evoking ancient iconography while remaining distinctly modern in their formal reduction. The surface is heavily textured, bearing the direct imprint of the artist's hand, with incised marks and layered material contributing to a tactile presence, almost archaeological. The dark, patinated finish enhances the sculptural depth, allowing light to move across the relief forms and highlighting the interaction between mass and void. As in many of Turinski's works, the bas-relief operates outside of narrative, instead channeling a meditative and symbolic language rooted in universal forms and collective memory. The composition reflects her journey as a sculptor, where structure, material, and presence take precedence over representation. A rare and striking example of Yugoslav modernism, embodying the raw materiality and introspective strength that define Venija Vučinić Turinski's work. Her pieces are held in major institutional collections, including the Museum of Contemporary Art in Belgrade.
