Eugène BOURGEOIS (1855-1909) The Capstan. Framed watercolour from the late 19th century with its mount. Signed Bourgeois in the bottom right. Sheet dimensions: 32 X 24cm. Framed dimensions: 45 X 37cm. This watercolour will delight all lovers of Breton seascapes with its central capstan motif and fishermen sorting their nets. Eugène Victor Bourgeois was born in Paris on 5 June 1855 and died in Saint-Cast-le-Guildo on 5 June 1909. A painter, illustrator, and poster artist, self-taught, Eugène Bourgeois began exhibiting at the Salon in 1874. He exhibited in 1880, as well as at the Salon of French Artists in 1881, where he received a medal of honour that year, followed by a 3rd class medal in 1885. He also received a bronze medal at the 1889 and 1900 Expositions Universelles. He is among the painters who exhibit out of competition at the Salon of French Artists. His painting is appreciated for its touches of light colours. He painted landscapes in Normandy, Brittany, Île-de-France, the Pyrenees, Camargue, Italy, as well as in North Africa. Eugène Bourgeois illustrated Les Sites de France, a series of postcards featuring landscapes.
