Louis XVI-style trumeau mirror with urn and dolphins – painted and gilded
An elegant, tall trumeau mirror in Louis XVI style. The upper panel is painted cream and decorated with an oval beaded border, four rosettes and, in the centre, a gilt urn between two dolphins, a classic motif from neoclassical ornament. Below is a gilt mirror frame with a palmette border and beading, holding old mirror glass. The painted panel and the gold finish of the ornaments are of a later date; the mirror frame and glass appear older. We therefore honestly describe it as a composite trumeau in Louis XVI style. Its size and tall, narrow shape make this a real eye-catcher: against the wall or above a mantelpiece it instantly adds height and light to a room. The soft cream with gold is restrained and chic. Perfect for a French, classic or Gustavian interior, but also surprisingly beautiful as a statement piece in a sober, modern interior. Good condition. The mirror glass has a few small dark spots in the silvering, consistent with old glass. On the side edge a small piece of paint has flaked off and there is an old repair; a small seam is visible in the corner of the upper frame. The gilding shows light wear.
