This Morris chair, emblematic of Arts & Crafts furniture, captivates with its timeless elegance and subtle engineering. Made from solid mahogany, it features a straight structure enhanced by brass inlays that delicately highlight the lines of the wood. The flat, rectangular backrest, composed of horizontal slats, is adjustable thanks to an ingenious rack system located at the end of the wide, overhanging armrests. These extend beyond the backrest, forming a distinctive silhouette. A brass bar fits into the notches of the rack, allowing the backrest's angle to be adjusted according to comfort needs. The open arms with vertical slats add lightness and rhythm to the overall design while maintaining a strong robustness. The generous seat consists of a thick square cushion, upholstered in a striped burgundy corduroy fabric, which enhances the warm and retro character of the chair. The elegantly shaped, upholstered feet end in discreet castors, facilitating the movement of the chair. When paired with a matching footrest, this lounge chair transforms into a chaise longue, ideal for moments of relaxation. The Morris chair, created in Victorian England and popularised by William Morris in the 1860s, is considered one of the first modern reclining chairs. Designed in the spirit of the Arts & Crafts movement, this chair, offering functional elegance, has marked the history of furniture and influenced Craftsman styles in the United States. ******** Period: Early 20th century.
