Frame in wood, ebonite and plaster, circa 1860. The image in the center could be exchanged by a mirror for example. The frame is composed of a structure of wood and plaster, the cardboard bottom with a glass pane; the black and golden ebonite façade. Ebonite - ebonite - ebony color - was discovered by Charles Goodyear in 1839 (vulcanization of natural rubber), was a precursor of synthetic and preceded Bakelite.
