Exceptional pair of baluster vases in polychrome majolica, signed Gerbing & Stephan of Bodenbach, Austria, 1885. The Gerbing & Stephan company is renowned for its historicist majolicas of the 19th century, featuring particularly refined decorations. Each vase has an elegant ovoid shape resting on a moulded base with scrolls. The bodies are adorned, in large oval reserves, with a polychrome decoration present on both sides of the vases, depicting songbirds perched amidst a naturalistic floral intertwining, treated with remarkable finesse in drawing. The shoulders are framed by richly sculpted openwork handles representing dragons. The flared necks adopt a dynamic silhouette inspired by Renaissance and neo-baroque repertoires. The whole is enhanced by abundant geometric and vegetal ornamentation in slight relief, highlighted with golden hues, cobalt blue, olive green, and ivory. The quality of the glaze, the richness of the ornithological decoration, and the balance of the forms testify to the craftsmanship of this factory, which specialised in the production of majolicas. Both are in very good condition. No cracks, no restorations. Bright glaze and fresh colours. Only one of the vases has a small minor chip, see last photo. 📐 height 35.5 cm. Width 20 cm.
