AMSTERDAM, "the Venice of the North" Hello I am offering two oils on thick cardboard in perfect condition signed by Jehann BERJONNEAU (1890-1966) depicting two typical views of the city of AMSTERDAM. These works reflect the post-impressionist style of the artist, characterised by a vigorous brushstroke and a colourful interpretation of northern light. Both pieces share a classic horizontal structure where water occupies the foreground, guiding the eye towards the city's iconic architecture. - The first work is a composition centred on a canal perspective leading to a bluish-purple bridge dominated by the slender silhouette of a tower (probably the "Montelbaanstoren" or "Westerkerk"). The foreground is animated by boats in earthy tones. - The second work focuses on a specific architectural element of Amsterdam: the drawbridge. The perspective here is tighter, framed by rows of townhouses on the left and dense vegetation on the right. BERJONNEAU uses a bold palette that moves away from the greyish realism often associated with the Netherlands to favour expression. In both paintings, the buildings and infrastructure are rendered in cobalt blue, mauve, and violet tones. Warm contrasts are noted with touches of orange and red on the hulls of the boats, creating a complementary contrast with the blue of the bridge. The water in the foreground reflects golden and ochre tones, suggesting late afternoon or autumn light. The artist employs a generous "impasto" knife technique. Dubbed "The Venice of the North" with its 165 canals stretching 100 km, its urban landscapes reveal many similarities with VENICE. Built in the 17th century during the Dutch Golden Age, these canals are the result of excellent urban planning. As a result, the city of AMSTERDAM was designated a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2010. These two works form a superb pair, offering a coherent and vibrant vision of Amsterdam, enhanced by the modern hand of BERJONNEAU. The entire set, in perfect condition, is ready to be hung on the wall for a poetic discovery of another VENICE.
