Original Japanese Tansu cabinet, made during the Taishō period – early Shōwa era, a time when traditional Japanese furniture evolved into more structured and functional forms, designed for everyday use and the organisation of domestic space. The piece is made from Paulownia wood (Paulownia spp.), known as kiri, a lightweight, stable wood that is naturally resistant to moisture, particularly valued for storing utensils, textiles, and everyday items. Its composition combines sliding panel doors, an open central shelf, and a set of lower drawers of various sizes, creating a subtle balance between closed spaces and open areas. This type of configuration was common in kitchen furniture (daidokoro tansu) or in multifunctional furniture within Japanese homes. The understated and functional wrought iron handles, along with the deep patina of the wood, give the piece a calm and sincere presence. The design is measured and well-proportioned, with a refined aesthetic that integrates naturally into contemporary, wabi-sabi, or Japandi interiors.
