This is a lovely Dutch tureen produced by Petrus Ragout in 1896 at the Maastricht ceramic factory. The series is called Marines and this one is a red transferware with images of boats and trees printed inside star shapes. It is a large bowl with a foot, without a lid, made of ironstone, or terre de fer. Notice the unusual handles on this model, I have not any other tureen with these uniquely shaped handles. It is harder to find this range in red, the series was also produced in a darker version in midnight blue that are easier to find. Clearly it could be used for many things, serving pasta, serving fruit salad, a fruit bowl or just as a decoration piece. It is in good condition for its age but there are marks of previous use. There is crazing on the surface and some little age spots inside the bowl but nothing that would render this bowl unusable, exceptional after 130 years really. It is without cracks. Please look at all the photos carefully. Width, handle to handle: approx 28.5cm/11.2 inches. Diameter of bowl rim: 21cm/8.7 inches. Height: 17cm/6.7 inches.
