A beautiful original Oase armchair, designed by Wim Rietveld for Ahrend De Cirkel in 1958. A remarkable Dutch design from the period when functionality, new materials, and a light, spacious design became increasingly important within furniture design. The Oase is a characteristic example of Dutch Mid-Century Modern and industrial design from the fifties. Wim Rietveld, son of the famous architect and designer Gerrit Rietveld, worked at De Cirkel from 1958, where he, along with others, made a significant contribution to the development of innovative Dutch furniture design. The Oase armchair emerged within this progressive design environment and was awarded the Signe d’Or in 1959. What stands out immediately is the slender, black lacquered steel frame. The construction gives the armchair an airy appearance, while the generously shaped seat and backrest ensure a comfortable and inviting look. The original red upholstery forms a nice contrast with the black frame and gives the armchair that striking vintage appearance that is so characteristic of design from this period. The strength of the Oase lies in the combination of shape, comfort, and simplicity. The design looks spacious and graphic but is surprisingly versatile at the same time. In a living room, it looks beautiful as an armchair, but it also feels right at home in an office, reading corner, reception area, or stylish office.
