Sculpture in solid wood by Kou Wakabayashi, Japan, 1971. Created in direct carving, this sculpture develops a composition built around a solid disc, set within a series of inclined planes and taut volumes. The structure rests on an integrated base, forming a fluid continuity between the metal pedestal and the sculpted mass. The surface work, entirely executed with a chisel, leaves visible the regular traces of the tool. These controlled striations animate the material and modulate the light on the wood, accentuating the tension between the roundness of the circle and the rigor of the angular lines. The work lies at the intersection of geometric abstraction and an organic sensitivity characteristic of post-war Japanese sculpture. Unique piece, signed. Japan, 1971. Exhibited at the International Biennale, Fiorentino Prize, Florence, 1971.
