French school of the 19th century, Portrait of a man reading. Oil on canvas. This work is a remarkable example of the intimate portrait as it was practiced in the second half of the 19th century. The subject — a bespectacled, bearded man absorbed in reading a document — is treated with a sobriety and economy of means characteristic of the realistic tradition. The palette, resolutely dark, plays on a range of browns, blacks, and greys, interrupted by the cold light falling on the face and the pages held in hand. This pronounced chiaroscuro reflects a deep knowledge of the Dutch masters of the 17th century, whose influence was felt for a long time on the French and Belgian schools of the period. The brushwork is free, energetic in the shadow areas, more precise and nuanced on the face, revealing the technical mastery of an academically trained painter. The whole conveys an impression of psychological truth and silent presence, characteristic of the great successes of the genre. The attribution remains to be established to this day. The work fits within the vein of realistic portraitists active between 1860 and 1900, in the orbit of artists such as Théodule Ribot, François Bonvin, or Léon Bonnat for France, or the contemporary Belgian school.
